P.A.N.K.U.S. was founded to help students know, live, and carry forward the spirit of Tarleton State University. More than two decades later, that purpose still anchors the organization.
People Against Not Knowing University Spirit
People Against Not Knowing University Spirit, better known as P.A.N.K.U.S., was founded on November 15, 2001, at Tarleton State University by 17 founding members. From the beginning, the organization was created to involve students in Tarleton State spirit activities, traditions, and events while welcoming anyone willing to show pride in the university.
For more than two decades, P.A.N.K.U.S. has carried forward the spirit, traditions, and pride of Tarleton State University. What began as a student spirit organization has grown into a lifelong network of students and alumni connected by service, leadership, tradition, and family.
This history highlights the moments that shaped the organization — from its first recruitment class and traditions ceremony to Silver Bugle wins, alumni milestones, national awards, and continued growth.

Show milestonesP.A.N.K.U.S. was officially founded on November 15, 2001, by 17 founding members on the Tarleton State University campus. The organization was created to involve students in spirit activities and events while building pride in Tarleton State traditions.
The first recruitment class began in Spring 2002. Early Meet-N-Greets were held in the Oscar P building, a campus space that is no longer part of Tarleton State’s physical footprint but remains part of the organization’s origin story.
Kyle Masters became the first elected president who was not a founding member. This marked an important transition from founder-led beginnings to a sustainable student-led organization.
P.A.N.K.U.S. introduced its first pin and held its first retreat in Glen Rose, Texas, at Tres Rios. These milestones helped establish the symbols, gatherings, and shared experiences that continue to shape the organization’s identity.
During Keith Price’s presidency, the organization began work to define a creed or motto. This effort helped give members a clearer understanding of what they represented and what P.A.N.K.U.S. expected from those who wore its letters, pins, and traditions.
This period strengthened the organization’s public identity, alumni connection, ceremonial traditions, and visible relationship to Tarleton State spirit.
Show milestonesThe organization introduced official pins for active members and alumni, strengthening visible connection across generations and giving members another symbol of identity, pride, and belonging.
P.A.N.K.U.S. won the Silver Bugle Hunt for the first time in 2012. This milestone connected the organization directly to one of Tarleton State’s most visible Homecoming traditions and remains one of the strongest public markers of P.A.N.K.U.S. spirit.
The Commish logo was created to extend the organization’s public presence. This gave P.A.N.K.U.S. a recognizable visual identity tied to spirit, tradition, and public representation.
The alumni organization created regions to better organize and connect alumni. That same year, the Traditions Ceremony was finalized and documented, creating the ceremony still used to pin members today.
The first issue of The Commish newsletter was sent to alumni and students, creating another bridge between active members and alumni while helping preserve the story of the organization as it continued to grow.
P.A.N.K.U.S. continued to formalize how it honors founders, remembers members, and carries alumni connection beyond active membership.

P.A.N.K.U.S. continued building its Silver Bugle legacy with a documented 2018 win. Members from this era also showed commitment beyond campus by traveling to support Tarleton State football and the mission of P.A.N.K.U.S.
Formal alumni certificates were used to recognize members entering alumni status and affirm their continued connection to the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of the alumni body.
Recent work has focused on alumni engagement, board infrastructure, officer development, and strengthening the organization for the future.

This work reflects the organization’s continued movement from a student group into a structured, lifelong community.
Looking Forward
P.A.N.K.U.S. history remains rooted in the same values that started it: Tarleton State spirit, family, leadership, service, tradition, and lifelong connection. The organization’s future is not only about remembering where it began, but about continuing to build something worthy of the members, alumni, and founders who carried it forward.
